Netflix Series The Sandman: What Does The Corinthian Want?

Netflix's flagship series, The Sandman, begins with Morpheus' massive chase to catch his mischievous nightmare called The Corinthian. The handsome man had escaped from the dream world called The Dreaming.

The Corinthian is a megalomaniac who doesn't want to limit his existence in the dream world and wants to rule the real world with power. To make his presence felt, he started killing humans.

When we first see Corinthian, he's in Berlin, Germany, taking a man's eye. Before long, Morpheus suddenly appears and tries to bring him back to the dream world, but before completing his task, Morpheus is captured by Roderick Burgess and put in a glass prison for more than 100 years.

Since there was nothing to fear, during that period of time, The Corinthian was free to do whatever he wanted to do.

Throughout season 1, Corinthian encounters various enemies of Morpheus, such as Roderick Burgess and Ethel Cripps. He helped them to keep Morpheus in prison forever, because he was afraid that after the King of Dreams came out he would destroy Corinthian.

In the comic books, we first meet The Corinthian at The Doll's House. However, in the series, he is depicted as one of the main antagonists who create conflict in the path of Morpheus.

After Morpheus manages to recover his totem and rebuild the dream world with help, he sends his most loyal librarian, Lucienne, for a world appraisal. Morpheus is again reminded that The Corinthian, along with two other arcanas, Gault and Fiddler's Green, are missing from the dream world.

What Does The Corinthian Want?

Like demons or other super evil entities, The Corinthian also wants to recreate the world in his own image. It also looks like a monster without eyeballs. In contrast, The Corinthian has two rows of teeth in each eye socket.

The sight was very unusual for the human world. That was the reason Corinthian always wore sunglasses which helped him hide himself in the crowd. His lack of eyeballs also explains why he used to take the eyes of his victims and eat them.

His goal was that he wanted to make the world look like him, without eyeballs. Over the years, removing the eyes of his victims has also become his signature style of killing.

After Morpheus was captured and there was nothing to stop The Corinthian, he began to influence other humans to brutally kill people like he did. In this way, the world felt the number of serial killers rising.

These serial killers created their own association and began calling themselves "collectors." In the series, collectors even held a convention attended by America's most violent serial killers, and The Corinthian was invited as the guest of honor.

Although every serial killer is aware of Corinthian's signature work and style, they don't realize that he is a nightmare. That's why everyone was surprised to learn that Corinthian looked so young and handsome, because dreams and nightmares don't age.

Is The Corinthian Dead Or Alive?

The Corinthians know that the Rose Walker can destroy the dream world and weaken the power of Morpheus. He ends up hunting down Rose's younger brother, Jed, to get Rose. Then take the two to the Royal Empire Hotel, where the convention is taking place. Are Rose and Jed free? No. They are locked in a hotel room so that Rose can fall asleep and enter the dream world.

As Rose Walker grows stronger, she begins to become the center of the dream, replacing Morpheus, and the whole process makes her weaker. That was why when Morpheus faced Corinthian during a convention, his stab could make Morpheus bleed.

In her sleep, Rose breaks down the walls between sleepers' dreams and finally turns them into one dream. It is at this time that Morpheus reveals to Rose that his single, turbulent dream will destroy the entire human world and will eventually kill the people he loves, therefore he must wake up.

In order to protect her brother and friend, Rose quickly wakes up from her slumber, and Corinthian's grand plan to weaken his own master fails. Once Morpheus regained his powers, he turned Corinthian into a miniature skull and brought him back to the dream world.

But Morpheus decided to make Corinthian again. He even stated that next time his creation would not be made with defects. And will serve mankind.

At the end of The Sandman season 1, Morpheus recreates Gault and turns him into a dream when he gives a Corinthian skull to Lucienne to keep it in a safe place because he feels that the world is not ready for another Corinthian.

As per the comic books, Morpheus will indeed make Corinthian once again, and next time he will be a more faithful creation. However, Corinthian, as a nightmare, will always be a chaos actor who will bring havoc to the human world if left unchecked.
