7 Differences in the Drakor Version of the Little Women Series with the Novel

Ever since the poster for the Little Women series was released featuring three sisters, one could already guess that this story was adapted from the famous classic novel by Louisa May Alcott. Prior to this, the novel has been featured in various other entertainment works. The latest is the Little Women film directed by Greta Gerwig in 2019.

But what the audience couldn't guess was that the Korean drama version of Little Women with the novel and film versions had many differences. Although the family background and characters are still the same, the Little Women drama has a different time, place, genre and conflict setting. Here are 7 differences.

 1. Different storyline

If you follow the original novel or the film, you still won't be disappointed watching the Korean drama version. The reason is, the Korean version has a different storyline. If the book version is set in 1868, the serial version is set in modern times.

The novel version tells the story of the lives of four sisters and their journey from childhood to adulthood. But in the drama version, it tells about the lives of three sisters and their journey through poverty, as well as their individual problems.

Even so, the common thread for both is the same. It is a story about sisters in a family who face poverty.

2. The difference in the number of sisters

The number of sisters in the two versions of Little Women is different. If in the novel version there are four, the drakor version only has three sisters. Although the numbers are different, the characters of the three sisters in this series have similarities.

First, Oh In Joo's eldest sister, has a resemblance to the eldest sister from the book version, namely Meg March. Both of them want to do the best for their siblings. The second brother, Oh In Hyung, bears a resemblance to Jo March who is interested in writing. The difference is, Oh In Hyung is a reporter, while Jo March is a book writer. The youngest Oh In Hye, has a resemblance to Amy March. Both have talent in the arts.

3. Different timelines and problems

The writer of the Korean drama Little Women, Chung Seo Kyung, revealed that the story came from her imagination. While reading the novel version by Louisa May Alcott, she imagined what this drama would look like if the sister lived in modern-day Korea. Oh In Joo, Oh In Kyung and Oh In Hye who have never had enough money, can only rely on each other to survive.

Then he developed a story, how a family like the Oh Sister was dragged into a conspiracy involving powerful people and uncovered various dark events that had been a secret. Similar to the novel version, these three sisters come from poor families and face complicated situations.

4. Different genres

The most visible of the two versions of Little Women is the difference in genre. If the novel is a coming of age drama genre, but in the drama version, it is a mystery and thriller genre. The plot of the Korean version of the story is more tense and full of puzzles. Although the family element remains the foundation in building the story

For example, since the beginning of the story, the audience has been invited to enter the family drama faced by Oh In Joo and his two younger siblings. Starting from the problem of work, money, to their relationship with their parents. But as the story continues, the drama version of Little Women presents many thriller sides that make the audience curious about the next story.

5. The mystery story of the orchid flower is not in the novel version

Because it carries the thriller mystery genre, in the Little Women drama there is a terror through the medium of blue orchids. This type of Epipogium aphyllum orchid is rare and is always present in people's deaths at unexpected times.

This flower is often called Ghost of Vietnam, Princess, to The Orchid of Death, whose presence seems to be a sign of an unpleasant event that will cost lives. Up to six episodes of Little Women, the blue orchid still has an unexplained mystery.

6. Different issues raised

The issues raised in the novel and the drama version are different. If the novel Little Women is a classic novel, it raises issues about women and families, as well as the struggles of women at that time to achieve education and dreams. However, in the drama version, it raises the issue of social observations related to society and economic class. The three sisters live in poverty and find it difficult to adapt to their environment due to their social status.

In the end, the dream of having money and living a prosperous life led the brothers to a life-threatening decision. This stark difference between classes is shown through their relationship with the rich and powerful Park Jae Sang family.

7. Character development in the drakor version is more difficult to predict

If in the original novel, the reader is invited to explore the characters of these four brothers from childhood to adulthood. So, every decision and life choice they make is nothing but an maturation process whose story just flows.

Unlike the drakor version, which has very deep and layered character development, up to these six episodes, the audience still continues to wonder about the original characters of certain characters. What is the position of Choi Do-il (Wi Ha-joon) like? Is it true that he is on Oh In Joo's side? Or does he have his own goals while approaching Oh In Joo? Not to mention how the Park Jae Sang couple's relationship with his wife could end up being manipulative?
