6 Recommended Royal Korean Films on Netflix

 South Korean royal films have always had fans. So it's not surprising, there are always royal films released on various film and drama streaming services, including Netflix.

In fact, films set in the Korean kingdom on Netflix are often included in the list of films that are being watched a lot, aka trending. This genre is no less than other Korean films that present romance dramas to action scenes.

The stories in Korean royal films are increasingly diverse from time to time. Not only fixated on stories of battles in various eras of dynasties, but there are also love stories, zombie attacks, and treasure hunts.

Here are six Korean royal films that have aired on Netflix and of course they can be a reference for those of you who want to 'taste' this film genre.


1. The Pirates: The Last Royal Treasure (2022)

The Pirates: The Last Royal Treasure is the latest Korean royal film to hit Netflix. This 2022 Korean royal film tells the story of a pirate group led by Hae Rang (Han Hyo-joo).

They try to find treasure on the ship belonging to General Goryeo which is located in the middle of the sea in 1388. Before finding the treasure, Hae Rang and his group must defeat other gangs of bandits and pirates from Japan.


2. Kingdom: Ashin of The North (2021)

Kingdom: Ashin of The North is one of the best Korean kingdom films on Netflix. This film has a rating of 7 on IMDb.

This film tells the story of Ashin (Jun Ji-hyun), a spy for the Kingdom of Joseon who uses a plant to regenerate the dead for revenge after learning bitter facts about the kingdom.

The plant that revives the dead seems to be capable of spawning zombies which then attack the Joseon Kingdom. This film is a prequel to the drama Kingdom which was previously successful on Netflix.


3. The Admiral: Roaring Currents (2014)

This Korean royal film tells the story of Admiral Yi Sun-shin (Choi Min-sik) who is a historical figure in Ginseng Country during the Joseon Kingdom era in 1957.

Admiral Yi was assigned by the King to defend Korean territory from the Japanese invasion. The task was not only difficult because Japan had a large fleet, but Korea's strength was indeed incomparable because it only had 12 fleets.

However, Admiral Yi managed to win the battle against the Japanese by taking advantage of the strongest undersea currents on the Korean Peninsula.


4. Portrait of A Beauty (2008)

Portrait of A Beauty is a Netflix Korean royal film set during the Joseon Dynasty.

This film tells the story of a girl named Shin Yun-jeong (Kim Gyu-ri) who is asked by her father to disguise herself as a man and replace the career of her older sister, Shin Yun-bok, who committed suicide.

But in the middle of his disguise, he met a mirror seller named Kang-mu (Kim Nam-gil) and started a romantic story with him.


5. King and The Clown (2005)

This film tells the story of two artists performing parody acts named Jang Saeng (Kam Woo-sung) and Gong Gil (Lee Joon-gi). However, Gong Gil is often teased by officials who watch their parody acts.

Jang Saeng who has feelings for Gong Gil doesn't accept it and asks him to run away to Seoul. In Seoul, they instead have to deal with King Yeonsan who turns out to have a crush on Gong Gil.


6. Untold Scandal (2003)

Untold Scandal is a romantic Korean royal film set in the Chosun Dynasty era. This film tells the story of Mrs. Joh (Lee Mi-suk), the dutiful wife of a king who turns out to be involved in many scandals.

Because, he 'played' with many men. Apart from that, there is also Jo Wong (Bae Yong-joon), a young man who has feelings for Mrs. Joh.
