Alex Abbad and Yessica Riany Create Works from Avatar: The Way of Water

In welcoming the release of the film Avatar: The Way of Water, Disney invited Alex Abbad and Yessica Ryani to create a joint work related to Avatar. Alex and Yessica also explained the manufacturing process in a press conference that was held on Tuesday (13/12/2022).

Yessica invited five celebrities to be the models until Alex Abbad collected a thousand bottles, see the full details below! keep reading!

1. Alex Abbad finds Avatar: The Way of Water very symbolic

Alex Abbad was deeply moved when he saw the trailer for Avatar: The Way of Water, which featured the avatar holding the flipper of a Pandora whale. Alex also believes that this film by James Cameron is in line with the sustainable theme.

"How do they fight for the territory that represents their nature. From there I think with the title too, this is very fitting for our collaboration to raise a theme related to sustainability, which indirectly fights for nature," explained Alex Abbad.

2. Alex Abbad made a whale-like masterpiece from Avatar: The Way of Water from an old bottle

Not much time was given, Alex Abbad had to collect approximately a thousand bottles. Alex also stayed up five days and one night to make this work entitled Life Goes On with his team.

"The bottles are cleaned, the labels removed, dried, crushed so that they can be flattened to follow the shape we want. Stringed one by one, arranged, colored, given a net," said Alex Abbad.

3. Alex and Yessica use ex-fisherman nets in their work

In making his works, Alex Abbad does not only use used bottles. Alex tries to use a lot of used items, one of which is an ex-fisherman's net to shape whales.

Even though it is digital, Yessica's photos also use recycled clothes. Used nets are also one of the materials attached to the model's clothes.

4. Lots of 3D elements created in just three days

Yessica also turns her work into a motion graphic with 24 frames per second and makes the result look like stop-motion. With so many elements, Yessica only needed three days.

"If you see there are rocks, there are fireflies, there are jellyfish, they are made in 3D. And it's only done in three days, we make the water move," said Yessica.

5. Yessica invites a number of artists in her project

Ibnu Jamil and Ririn Ekawati became Jake and Neytiri. Asmara Abigail was also transformed into Moa through the magical hands of Yessica Ryani.

"We contacted several celebrities that we wanted to stretch, whose faces and characters somehow have souls like Avatar," explained Yessica.

You can see Yessica's work on her social media. If you are curious about the whale from the bottle by Alex Abbad, you can find it at Pos Bloc, Jakarta from 13 December to 13 January.
