Avatar 2 box office in China is predicted to reach IDR 5.5 trillion

Avatar 2: The Way of Water has an estimated 2.5 billion yuan (US$357 million) or around IDR 5.59 trillion (1 RMB = IDR 2,237.93) gross from China's box office. The estimate was disclosed by Maoyan, the leading ticket company in the country, Friday (16/12).

The forecast was also published in the early hours of Avatar 2 officially premiering in China. These estimates are usually based on actual sales, pre-sales and other indicators, such as social media reactions.

Thus, this figure is expected to continue to increase in the foreseeable future. In the past 10 days, and ever since Avatar 2 got its release slot, the Chinese central government has lifted many of the Covid-19 control restrictions.

Avatar 2 also had the opportunity to carry out a three-week marketing campaign, as well as being broadcast at nearly the same time as world cinemas.

When it aired 13 years ago, Avatar (2009) made about US $ 200 million. Thus, the figure from the box office in China is expected to be more than that because the number of screens in general and premium is now more.

The re-release of the first Avatar film in China made the film directed by James Cameron manage to occupy the first position of the highest-grossing film in the world again in 2021 after dropping to second place in 2019 due to Avengers: Endgame.

When will Avatar: The Way of Water be on Disney Plus?

While there have been exceptions (such as with Strange World), most Disney releases in 2022 have been given a minimum of a 45-day exclusive theatrical window. The earliest any release has arrived on Disney+ has been 46 days after its initial release.

Technically, that means Avatar: The Way of Water could arrive on the streaming service as early as Monday, January 30. But don't start marking that date in your diary just yet as we think that's unlikely.

Assuming that the sequel enjoys a lengthy theatrical run like that of the first movie, it could be that Avatar: The Way of Water's streaming debut is delayed to ensure fans see it as Cameron intended on the big screen.

It could be that the sequel ends up with more of a traditional exclusive theatrical run of at least 90 days. A timeline like that would put the release around mid-March, potentially Wednesday, March 15 as Disney+ favours a Wednesday launch for movies.

A lot will likely depend on just how much of a theatrical draw Avatar: The Way of Water proves to be. If the sequel has a softer run than expected, it could arrive on Disney+ sooner than expected nearer that late January release.

However, we have a feeling that we could be waiting a bit longer to revisit Pandora again and again. To pass the time, you can just watch Avatar right now on Disney+.

The result is lots of coral reefs and beautiful sea creatures that swim freely in the movie Avatar: The Way of Water. The film Avatar: The Way of Water will be showing in cinemas around the world starting Wednesday, December 14, 2022. In this sequel, James Cameron takes the audience into a new adventure that explores the underwater world of Pandora.
