5 Actors Who Failed to Play Ant-Man, Here's the Reason

Debuted in the 60s, Ant-Man is a Marvel superhero identity that was first embraced by Hank Pym, co-founder of the Avengers at Marvel Comics. Since the late 70s, his identity has been carried on by Scott Lang, who is also part of the super-team Avengers and Fantastic Four. With such a long history, it's clear that Ant-Man is a character that is inseparable from Marvel, as well as the MCU version played by actor and comedian Paul Rudd.

Speaking of the MCU version of Scott Lang, Paul Rudd will soon be reprising his role in the film that many fans have been highly anticipating, namely Ant-Man and the Wasp Quantummania. But you know, before Rudd's name became famous among Marvel fans, there were actually a number of other actors who almost played the character of Ant-Man. Most of the names of these actors may even be familiar to your ears. Here are 5 actors who failed to get the role of Ant-Man in the MCU.

Adrien Brody

Historically, Ant-Man was the first MCU film that Marvel Studios announced back in 2006 at the San Diego Comic-Con International event. At that time, many fans were curious about which actor would play their favorite character. Before Paul Rudd got the role, it turned out that the role of Scott Lang aka Ant-Man had almost fallen into the hands of actor Adrien Brody. At that time the producers felt that the acting quality of the King Kong and Predators star was enough to bring his character to life. Fortunately, this decision was not carried forward, because Brody himself is not as well-known as Rudd when it comes to playing witty characters.

Ewan McGregor

Loyal Hollywood fans are no stranger to Ewan McGregor. Of the many characters he has played, McGregor is most famous as the Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi in the Star Wars franchise. Last year he also had time to reprise his role in the Obi-Wan Kenobi series that aired on Disney +. When the Ant-Man film was first developed, this actor who is well-known among Star Wars fans turned out to have almost played Scott Lang. Unfortunately, after being considered for the role of Doctor Strange as well, in the end McGregor actually didn't get any role in the MCU.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is one of the Hollywood actors who has been a star quite often in films directed by Christopher Nolan. Besides Inception (2010), he has also starred in the superhero film The Dark Knight Rises (2012) as one of Batman's allies. Unfortunately, the same fate did not apply to the Marvel superhero cinema universe, where he failed to land the role of Ant-Man in his first film. Apart from Ant-Man, Gordon-Levitt also received an offer to play Peter Quill alias Star-Lord in the film Guardians of the Galaxy (2017), but at that time he turned it down because he was busy filming Sin City: A Dame to Kill For (2014).

Simon Pegg

When Ant-Man screenwriter Edgar Wright was still in the director's chair, Simon Pegg was one of the actors who had been considered for the role of Scott Lang. However, this never materialized because in the end the role of Ant-Man was actually given to Rudd, while Wright only focused on writing the film. In 2022, during his interview with Newsweek, Pegg was again asked if he still wanted to be involved with Marvel films. Unfortunately, the 52-year-old actor now only wants to focus on films for adults, one example is the Mission Impossible franchise in which he is involved.

Steve Buscemi

The last actor who was considered to star in Ant-Man was Steve Buscemi. The difference with the previous names, instead of playing Scott Lang, Buscemi actually emerged as the strongest candidate to play the character Hank Pym, the first Ant-Man who could shrink using his Pym Particles. At that time the producers really hoped that Buscemi could take the role, but he turned it down due to his busy work on the animated film Hotel Transylvania 2 (2015). In the end, the role of Hank Pym was taken over by Michael Douglas until now.

Those are 5 actors who almost became Ant-Man in the MCU, before finally having to give up the role for various reasons. Regardless of the reasons for these actors, at least this time Paul Rudd himself has managed to prove that the role of Scott Lang was destined for him. Where many fans like Rudd's performance in showing the character of Scott who is witty as well as heroic. Ant-Man and the Wasp Quantumania, which will be released on February 17, looks like it will further strengthen Rudd's position as the best Ant-Man actor in the hearts of fans.
