Is This the Main Villain in The Marvels?

 This year it is confirmed that Captain Marvel will return soon with her second film entitled The Marvels. In the 33rd MCU film, he will be accompanied by Ms. Marvel and Monica Rambeau who each recently got their superpowers. Apart from these formidable superheroes, this film directed by Nia DaCosta will also mark the debut of actress Zawe Ashton as the main villain of The Marvels. Zawe Asthon as Dar-Benn?

Deadline first revealed the role of the main villain Zawe Ashton in The Marvels itself in 2021. Given that at that time there was no additional information revealing his character, currently a number of rumors and fan speculation have been converging on the figure of supervillain Dar-Benn. One of the first credible scoopers to claim this news was Marvel updates on Twitter, which was later endorsed by a number of Reddit users.

First appeared in the comic Silver Surfer Vol. 3 #53 (1991), Dar-Benn himself is told as the general of the Kree army who wants to overthrow the emperor Clumsy Foulup. Together with his best friend Ael-Dan, he managed to kill Foulup and make it appear as if it was done by the Skrulls. It was at this point that the two of them went on to become the new leaders of the Kree empire. Unfortunately, Dar-Benn and Ael-Dan's power did not last long, because Deathbird from the Shi'ar nation came to kill them, where their minds were then absorbed by Supreme Intelligence, the original leader of the Kree.

If it's true that Zawe plays Dar-Benn in The Marvels, that means she will be playing the female version of Dar-Benn. Presenting a character of a different gender from the comic version is actually quite common for Marvel Studios to do. We can see this from the character Ancient One in the film Doctor Strange, then Ajak, Makkari, and Sprite in Eternals, and even Supreme Intelligence who also appeared in the first Captain Marvel film. So it is not impossible that Tom Hiddleston's lover will play a different gender character from Dar-Benn.


Dar-Benn's influence on The Marvels and the MCU

In terms of strength and popularity, Dar-Benn is indeed not as good as Ultron or Thanos who get a special place as the villain in Infinity Saga. However, considering that he is basically a Kree, we also cannot underestimate his existence. A Kree usually has physical strength, stamina, and superhuman endurance that is two times greater than an ordinary human. And of course, as the main villain in The Marvels, Dar-Benn also has the potential to be described as more powerful than the combined powers of Captain Marvel, Ms. Marvel, and Monica Rambeau.

On the other hand, as a general, Dar-Benn also definitely has a Kree army which is known to be very strong in the galaxy. Especially in the comics, Kree is described as a large empire whose territory spans across the Magellanic Cloud galaxy. All of these things will of course be a story that is strong enough to be presented in The Marvels, considering that Captain Marvel himself has a fairly close relationship with the Kree nation. As the new leader of the Kree in the film, perhaps Dar-Benn has ambitions to bring the Kree back into a bigger nation in the Multiverse Saga.


Another Potential Supervillain

We need to note, that what we discuss this time is still theoretical or speculation. Because as we know, Marvel Studios itself has yet to issue an official statement regarding the role of the main villain Zawe Ashton in the upcoming The Marvels film. That's why Zawe's possible roles are endless. Aside from Dar-Benn, Zawe could also play his best friend, Ael-Dan, as Murphy's Multiverse claims. Because the comic version is more or less the same, it could also be that the villains in The Marvels will be a combination of the two, Dar-Benn and Ael-Dan.
