One Piece: Is This Oda's Inspiration for Creating Devil Fruits?

The readers of the One Piece series are perhaps one of the sources of inspiration for the devil fruit power that Eiichiro Oda presents in his story. Readers are a very important part of the story of One Piece and for all of them. Because of that, it makes sense that Oda Sensei was inspired to "manifest" their wish in the form of a devil fruit power.

The world of One Piece is a very big world with many mysteries that have not been revealed until now. And one of the mysteries that is still unanswered is about the devil fruit. We still don't know where devil fruit actually comes from, who made it, and so on. Even so, there is an interesting theory about the inspiration for this devil fruit.

Devil Fruit Origin Theory

As mentioned above, if the origin of the devil fruit is still one of the big mysteries that has not been revealed. The fans themselves finally presented a lot of theories and speculation regarding this matter. Oda Sensei himself had promised his fans dozens of years ago that he would reveal this when an important scientist appeared.

And the figure of the scientist is none other than Vegapunk. In the current Egghead arc, Oda finally introduces the figure of the smartest scientist in the world of One Piece. After his introduction, Vegapunk presented his own theory about the creation of devil fruit in chapter 1069. According to him, devil fruit is probably the result of evolution from human's greatest desire.

One of the greatest desires of humans themselves is to have powerful powers and abilities. Or it could be other things. Each of the abilities or powers of the existing devil fruit is a picture or manifestation of the human's greatest desire for that power. Vegapunk also explained that there is a reason why devil fruit users must lose the ability to swim in the sea.

According to his theory, the human desire or desire to have powerful abilities or powers manifested through this devil fruit is considered unreasonable and unnatural. Because of that, the sea hates that thing or desire. Devil fruit users are hated by the ocean. With all the power and awesomeness of a devil fruit, geeks might ask where Oda Sensei's inspiration came from to come up with such a thing.

The Reader Is The Devil Fruit Inspiration

Readers or fans are an important element in a manga or comic series. They are the ones who will be presented with various stories created by the writers. This also includes the One Piece series, which is known to have a very strong connection with its fans. In fact, Oda Sensei himself often interacts with fans.

What's also interesting about the One Piece series is how Oda actually provided new and existing information or gave hints for a long time. Most of the facts or important things related to a matter have actually been given a hint (foreshadow) since the beginning of the chapter or from a long time ago. For example, a hint if Sanji is actually a prince or a royal.

One Piece fans themselves have grown since the series' inception, and are growing rapidly. And what is no less interesting is that Oda gives readers the opportunity to present or give any response to Oda. He then collects and presents these in a column called SBS corner/column.

Based on this, it could be that the wishes or expectations or other things conveyed by the fans become a source of inspiration for the power of the devil fruit. Oda Sensei probably read all the letters addressed to him, and noted if there were interesting things that someone wanted. And then Oda realized this wish in the form of a devil fruit power.

As humans, it is certainly normal for us to have desires that are beyond our reach. We always want to become what it can be difficult for us to become, or in Vegapunk's terms evolve into a better version. Especially when it comes to super powers. All of those things might be the trigger and fuel for Oda to present various things about devil fruit.
