New DC Universe Project 'The Authority'

DC Studios bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran have just announced a number of projects for the first Chapter of the DC Universe entitled 'Gods and Monsters'. In addition to popular superhero reboot projects like Superman: Legacy and Batman' The Brave and the Bold, the studio has also revealed that it will be working on unusual DC Universe shows, one of which is a film called The Authority.

Interestingly, the announcement of the film that was predicted to introduce a new super team in the DC Universe succeeded in making everyone curious. Because reportedly this upcoming superhero film will tell the story of a super eccentric team that protects the Earth in an 'extreme' way. What are the details of the project and how is their story at DC Comics? Let's get straight to the point, geeks.

The Authority Describes the Vision of the DC Universe

Before discussing their origins in DC Comics, let's first understand The Authority's project in DC Universe. According to Gunn's explanation, The Authority film itself will indirectly confirm that the DC Universe is not only a cinema universe for superheroes and supervillains, but also for a group of characters who are in the middle of it. “Not all [DC] films and series are about the good guys vs the bad guys, not about something big coming from the sky and in the end the good guys win. As well as white hats and black hats, there are also gray hats," said Gunn.

Gunn himself is actually quite familiar with the gray zone in the DC Universe. Previously, he had worked on the film The Suicide Squad (2021), which tells the story of a group of criminals trying to save Earth. Then Gunn has also worked on his spin-off show entitled Peacemaker, in which the series, starring John Cena, focuses on characters who cannot be categorized as superheroes or supervillains. Well, DC Universe's film The Authority also seems to have the same 'feel' as Gunn's previous vision.

Superhero Team with Extreme Methods

After knowing the direction of the DC Universe cinema universe, especially with regard to the film The Authority, now is the time for us to get to know more about who the idiosyncratic superhero team in question really is. First introduced in the comic The Authority (1999), this superhero team known for having extreme methods is actually part of the Wildstorm Universe. Their story begins with the super team Stormwatch where most of its members are told to have been killed by alien Xenomorphs in the comic WildC.A.T.S/Aliens (1998).

The remaining members of Stormwatch, including Jenny Sparks, Apollo, Midnighter, The Doctor, The Engineer, Jack Hawksmoor, and Swift, eventually decide to form the superhero team The Authority, claiming to be the Supreme Authority on Earth. The first enemy they have to face is Kaizen and his army of terrorists. The Kaizen plan is to destroy all cities in the world, starting with Moscow. Kaizen's plan was thwarted after The Authority managed to brutally arrest Kaizen while trying to destroy London.

In subsequent adventures, many similar things are attempted to be presented in the story of The Authority, where in essence, through the Wildstorm story, DC is trying to describe how it would be if the superhero team felt free from the law. They can kill, destroy, and even do other extreme things in order to maintain Earth's peace. What's even more interesting, with a base called the Carrier, The Authority can move in the imaginary space that separates Wildstorm and the DC Universe. That's why in the end their influence can also reach the DC Universe.

In the latest story, Superman and the Authority (2021), this super team is even re-formed by Superman, who recruits Black Manchester, Midnighter, Apollo, O.M.A.C. (One Man Army Corps), Lightray, Natasha Irons, and Enchantress, as its core members. Under the leadership of Superman, The Authority is told to go to the planet Warworld to overthrow the tyrannical supervillain Mongul. In the process Superman is able to defeat Mongul, while other members of The Authority manage to sabotage Warworld and finally liberate their oppressed people.

The Greatness of Members of The Authority

Over the years there have been countless superheroes who have joined The Authority. However, the most famous of them can be counted on the fingers. This can happen because not many of them are consistently depicted as team members, both in the Wildstorm Universe and the DC Universe. Here are the names, nicknames, as well as the strengths of the most iconic members of the superhero team The Auhority:

  • Jenny Sparks: The Spirit of the 20th Century. The founder and first leader of The Authority who has the power to control electricity and immortality that keeps him young.
  • The Engineer: The Maker. As the name implies, the Engineer is a member of The Authority who is able to create anything with his super intelligence and nano-technology body. In addition, he can also change shape, multiply, and other abilities that continue to grow every time he appears.
  • Apollo: The Sun King. Known as the Superman version of The Auhority, Apollo's powers allow him to fly, have superhuman physical strength, and can shoot sunbursts from his eyes.
  • Midnighter: Night's Bringer of War. Apollo's love interest is known as a superhero whose abilities include super strength, super speed, and regeneration.
  • Swift: The Winged Huntress. Born with a genetic disorder, Swift has super powers that allow her to fly, move very quickly, have senses like birds, and even talk to birds.
  • Jack Hawksmoor: The God of the Cities. In accordance with his nickname, Jack's main strength is to feel the energy of a city, so he can know what has been and is happening in it.

With this ability they have, it is not impossible that the most famous members of The Authority will also make their debut in the DC Universe cinema universe. Of course, with some adjustments that make the character match the other characters.
