Director Reveals Advanced Technology Avatar 2 The Way of Water

Avatar: The Way of Water is currently showing in all cinemas throughout Indonesia. The sequel, which has been awaited for 13 years, was actually made using some of the latest film technology.

Avatar 2 itself is shown in various formats including RealID 3D, Dolby Cinema, IMAX, and IMAX 3D. Avatar 2 director James Cameron hopes this film will make 3D movies boom again.

“If you think about how it worked back then, 3D was something new,” Cameron said referring to the first Avatar film which was released in 2009, as quoted by Yahoo News, Thursday (15/12/2022).

"Now 3D has found its level as a consumer choice. At that time we had 6,000 screens worldwide that were 3D screens, now there are 120,000," he continued.

Apart from being broadcast in 3D format, Avatar: The Way of Water also utilizes high frame rate (HFR) technology. With this technology, some parts of the film are projected at a higher frame rate of 48fps.

This technology has previously been used in several films, including the Hobbit and Gemini Man film trilogies. This technology makes the appearance of the film very smooth and realistic, but many viewers do not like it.

According to Cameron, the HFR format still has some drawbacks. Because of that only a small part of the film is shown in 48fps, while the other part still uses the 24fps standard.

"The rule is whenever they're underwater, it's 48 frames. Boom. It's a no-brainer. Some flying scenes and some wide vistas make use of 48 frames," Cameron said.

"In fact, sometimes it's even counterproductive because it looks too subtle, right? So the trick is figuring out where to use it and where not to use it,"

Cameron added that using HFR technology in Avatar: The Way of Water is actually beneficial, because it manages to minimize the issues that viewers usually experience when watching 3D movies.

"One thing I can say for sure is that 48 frames doesn't really benefit 2D movies. It's really about creating a better experience in 3D," he concluded.
